President Prabowo Subianto Pays Tribute to Ulemas’ Contribution to Indonesia’s Independence and Nation-Building
President Prabowo Subianto Thursday (08/27) paid tribute to Islamic scholars for their immense contributions to Indonesia’s national journey.
The President delivered the remarks while officially opening the 35th Congress of Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at Untung Surapati Field, Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School in Jombang regency, East Java province.
On that occasion, the President recalled the important role of ulemas, kiai (Islamic religious leaders), and Islamic boarding schools in defending Indonesia’s independence.
According to him, although Indonesia’s independence was proclaimed in Jakarta, its greatest test came during the 1945 Battle of Surabaya.
“I wish to express my deepest respect to the kiais and ulemas. Indonesia’s independence was proclaimed in Jakarta, but it was tested in Surabaya. During the battle of Surabaya in October and November 1945, ulemas, kiais, and Islamic boarding schools played an immense role,” the President stated.
Drawing lessons from past struggles, President Prabowo Subianto introduced the term “Jas Hijau” (Green Jacket), echoing former president Sukarno’s famous “Jas Merah” (Red Jacket) slogan: jangan sekali-sekali melupakan sejarah! (never forget history). Through “Jas Hijau”, the President urged Indonesians never to forget the contributions of ulemas.
“Therefore, just as Sukarno coined the term Jas Merah – never forget history – I would like to introduce Jas Hijau: never forget the contributions of the ulemas,” the President said.
The President’s tribute extended beyond prominent national figures. He also expressed special appreciation to grassroots kiais across the country who quietly and tirelessly serve their communities without seeking recognition.
“Thank you to all ulemas, both prominent figures and village kiais, whose names may never appear on television. Every day, they help safeguard the moral character of our children,” he said.
The Head of State further said that these religious leaders play a vital role in preserving social harmony, maintaining peace in villages, and praying for the nation without seeking anything from the state in return.
“Thank you. I extend my highest respect to all ulemas,” he said.
President Prabowo Subianto also expressed his gratitude to all NU members, including kiais, female religious leaders (nyai), and students. He also emphasized that a strong and united NU is fundamental to Indonesia’s strength and unity. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (FI/MEP)
