President Prabowo Subianto has underscored the need for enhanced cooperation among the member states of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) to achieve food and energy resilience, which will serve as a foundation for regional sovereignty.

In his remarks at the 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Malaysia on Tuesday (05/27), the President highlighted the importance of energy and food resilience in independence and sovereignty.

“Therefore, I propose that we also concentrate on food and energy resilience. I would also like to invite the BIMP-EAGA to work together to make our subregion a regional food production center,” he said.

The Head of State also stated that the energy used in the region will improve sovereignty, adding that the governance, implementation mechanisms, and economic integration of BIMP-EAGA can soon be enhanced.

“Including the improvement of the private sector engagement and infrastructure project acceleration. All of those can be achieved shortly,” he said.

President Prabowo also expressed optimism that enhancing cooperation and integrating people’s economic activities in the region will benefit everyone, adding that BIMP-EAGA will play a more significant role in the region.

“I would like to use this opportunity to thank Secretary Makarong for the report that has shown the real progress that we have made,” he said.

The President concluded his remarks by urging that the summit can strengthen the member states’ commitment and realign their vision with the ASEAN 2045 vision, while inviting the heads of state to leverage the moment to elevate BIMP-EAGA to become a real model for sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready development.

“We are fully committed and ready to achieve it,” he remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (DH/MMB)
