President Prabowo Subianto Monday (11/18) attended the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty initiative, held as part of the G20 Summit series at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took the lead in the launch and urged global action to combat hunger and poverty, which pose critical challenges worldwide.

On that occasion, President Subianto sat alongside Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and President of the Argentine Republic Javier Milei, demonstrating Indonesia’s pivotal position in the G20 Summit, a forum that includes leaders from the world’s most influential countries.

In his remarks, President Lula da Silva highlighted the issue of social inequality by pointing out that 733 million people are still facing undernourishment in 2024 despite global food production totaling almost 6 billion tons each year.

“Hunger is the biological expression of social evils,” Lula firmly said, citing Brazilian social scientist Josué de Castro.

President Lula also stated that the Alliance will articulate international recommendations, effective public policies, and sustainable sources of financing. To date, the Alliance has garnered support from 81 countries, 26 international organizations, 9 international financial institutions, as well as several philanthropic foundations and non-governmental organizations.

“This Alliance was born in the G20, but its destiny is global,” President Lula da Silva said.

The launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty stood as one of the key milestones of this year’s G20 Summit, which reinforced the collective commitment to creating a more just and prosperous world. President Subianto’s participation in this forum also underscored Indonesia’s proactive role in addressing global challenges and fighting for a more inclusive future.
