President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, along with Vice President and Cabinet Ministers, on Tuesday (12/5) made an online payment of zakat—charity for the poor—through the National Zakat Agency (Baznas).

“Giving charity for the poor and needy in the form of zakat is mandatory for Muslims who are financially stable,” the President said.

President Jokowi expressed hope that the zakat funds collected by the Baznas could be used to help people in the country, particularly those who are mostly affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“I appeal to the public to pay their zakat through the Baznas as it is safer, more well-organized and the distribution can be well-targeted as well,” he said, adding that paying zakat during the fasting month of Ramadhan may complete the worship rituals during the holy month.

“May the zakat we spend can complement our fasting worship and our obedience to Allah,” he said. (HIM/EN)
