Good afternoon,

Indonesia’s presidency has successfully produced the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration, which was initially doubted by many.

The declaration consists of 52 paragraphs and contains one highly debated paragraph regarding the statement towards the war in Ukraine.

The discussion was very long one and, in the end, the G20 leaders agreed to the draft, namely to condemn the war for it violates territorial boundaries and a nation’s integrity. The war has caused people’s suffering and exacerbated global economy that is still fragile due to the pandemic which poses risks to food, energy, and potential financial crises.

Therefore, the G20 discussed the impact of war on global economic conditions. The Summit also produced several concrete achievements that include, among others, pandemic fund establishment, which to date has managed to collect US$1.5 billion, as well as establishment and operation of the Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST) under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amounting to US$81.6 billion to help countries in crisis. Also, energy transition mechanism, in which Indonesia received a commitment from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) of US$20 billion.

A shared commitment to protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030. This is very good. And we will continue the commitment to reduce land degradation by 50 percent by 2040 on a voluntary basis.

I think the concrete results are as I mentioned although there are many other results.

That concludes my remarks.

Thanks, Pak Jokowi. I am Sweety from The New York Times.

I wanted to ask about the missile strike in Poland. Will you worry that you know those events in Poland would have derailed your agenda in the G20? Thank you.

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

First, I regret the incident in Poland. I call on everyone to remain calm and refrain from escalating tension. I always state that war will only bring devastation. Therefore, we must stop the war. And President Biden himself has already said that the missile is unlikely coming from Russia.

Dito (Kompas TV)
Thank you, Pak Jokowi. I am Dito from Kompas TV. First, I would like to congratulate you for hosting the G20 Summit safely amid the escalating geopolitical situation.

I have one simple question, Sir. You mentioned the Bali Leaders’ Declaration earlier, the first declaration that can be produced since February 2022. We have also received the draft; it is true that the last communique took place in February 2022.

My question is simple, was the Bali Leaders’ Declaration really agreed upon by all the leaders of G20 members state, including Russia? Does Russia also agree on the declaration?

Also, you might be able to explain, about the title, although it does not really matter, Communiqué Leaders’ Statement, is Bali Leaders’ Declaration is the same as a communiqué or what? Thank you.

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

Yes. So, the one highly debated paragraph, regarding the statement towards the war in Ukraine. We discussed this until midnight and finally the Bali Declaration was reached by consensus. We agreed that the war brings negative impacts on the global economy. Then, global economic recovery will not be achieved without peace. Therefore, in my opening statement, I called for the war to end.

In addition to the declaration, the G20 leaders have also agreed to produce concrete cooperation in the health sector. I have already mentioned the Pandemic Fund of US$1.5 billion, energy transition, as well as digital transformation. At that time, there was a Russian representative present at the Summit. It was tough, but we finally reach the consensus.

I think that is all. The Ministers may explain the rest. Nevertheless, I mentioned earlier that the G20 is the economic, financial, and development forum, not a political one. So, please do not correlate it to politics.

I think that’s all. Thank you.
