Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has announced it will renovate and rebuild 10,000 school, Islamic school, and university buildings across Indonesia within the period of 2019 – 2024.

Based on Presidential Regulation Number 43 of 2019 on Development, Rebuilding or Renovation of Traditional Markets, University Buildings, and Elementary and High School Buildings, the Ministry has been mandated with an additional task of renovating and rebuilding as many as 10,000 school buildings and Islamic school buildings all over the country within the period of 2019-2024.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said that renovation and rebuilding works must comply with good standards.

In addition, he said that the works must also include providing sport facilities, clean water and good sanitation facilities – including places for washing hands – as well as revamping the school buildings’ landscape.

The school buildings must also be designed to be quake-resistant, he added.

“We also have to apply (the same) building standards and facilities at other schools. We must also make the most of the existing facilities. Our next generations must be smarter than the current generation thanks to better facilities,” Basuki said.

In the 2019 Budget Year, the Ministry – through the Center for Development of Education, Sport and Market Facilities of the Directorate General of Cipta Karya – has rebuilt 1,467 school buildings (elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school) and 144 Islamic school buildings.

It is hoped that the renovation and rebuilding of these school buildings will enable the students to study conveniently when they are back to school once the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

The renovation and rebuilding program is also in line with the theme of this year’s National Education Day, namely “Learning from COVID-19 Pandemic.”  (BKP Kementerian PUPR/EN)
