During a meeting with a number of national figures on Thursday (26/9), President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his appreciation to protests held by university students in several regions in the past few days.

“Those protests, I consider them as part democracy in our country. Their aspirations voiced during the protests will be taken into consideration for the betterment of our country,” President Jokowi said, while calling on the protestors not to damage public facilities or commit vandalism which will not benefit us all.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the President said he will meet with the university students immediately. “I will meet with the students, particularly with Student Executive Body (BEM) tomorrow,” he added.

President Jokowi went on to say he had received information about repressive measures taken by security officers to quell the protests. “I will call the Commander of Indonesian Police to resolve any protests without taking repressive measures, but with well-calculated measures,” the President said.

Nevertheless, President Jokowi added that firm actions must be taken to protesters who commit violence. (FID/RAH/ES)
