Your Excellency Prime Minister Justin Trudeau;

Your Majesty, Your Excellencies ASEAN Leaders,

The ASEAN and Canada partnership is entering a new phase today, namely as strategic partners. Welcome to the big ASEAN family, Prime Minister Trudeau. Hopefully, such things will provide greater benefits for our people and the region.

Canada is ASEAN’s strategic partner in establishing food security, developing downstream industry, and establishing open and fair trade in the region. In addition, as Canada’s strategic partner, I hope to be an anchor of regional peace and stability that adheres to international law and encourages more concrete and inclusive cooperation, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

That concludes my remarks.

I hereby declare the ASEAN-Canada Summit open.
