Remarks of President of the Republic of Indonesia During the Inauguration of Amplas Bus Station of Medan City and Tanjung Pinggir Bus Station of Pematang Siantar City, North Sumatra Province, February 9, 2023

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Good afternoon,

May peace be upon us,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Traffic jams and congestions nowadays are happening not only in Jakarta, but also in a number of major cities such as Medan, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar, and we must address such issue thoroughly. Keep it clean and convenient so that the bus stations can provide the best service to the people. Please do not repeat the same mistakes of old bus stations which were dirty and full of hoodlums. No one wants to embark on the bus if those things still happened.

I always encourage the people to use public transportation, be it inter-city or inter-island buses, in major cities. In Jakarta, we already started with MRT, and LRT will soon be finished. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail is also expected to be completed soon.

I hope other major cities can also prepare to develop LRT, MRT, and other modes of public transportation; otherwise, traffic jams and congestions become more and more rampant and road expansion become impossible and the people will depend on their private vehicles.

I hope the construction of Amplas bus station of Medan and Tanjung Pinggir bus station of Pematang Siantar can foster a habit of travelling by bus transportation.

Previously, I asked a driver and he said that there are buses from here to Pekanbaru, Dumai, Jakarta, Pematang Siantar, and also to airports. Such services will be covered here in Amplas bus station at Medan city.

That concludes my remarks.

The bus station’s construction spent Rp43 billion and I hope it can provide best service to the people when going operational.

By saying bismillahirrahmanirrahim, I hereby inaugurate Amplas bus station of Medan city and Tanjung Pinggir bus station of Pematang Siantar city this afternoon.
