Security Forces Personnel to Guard Papua Construction Workers Following Nduga Shooting

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo asserted that the Government is still investigating the shooting of a number of road construction workers in Nduga District, Papua, on Monday (3/12).

“We will solve the case and evacuate the victims immediately. After that, the construction will be continued,” President Jokowi said after the opening of National Congress and the 28th anniversary of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), at the Mahligai Agung Convention Hall of Bandar Lampung University, Bandar Lampung, Thursday (6/12).

The President said that he has instructed security forces personnel to guard infrastructure development projects in order to guarantee the safety of the workers, particularly those who are working in the jungle. He also added that infrastructure projects in Papuawill not be stopped.

“Once again, the project is aimed at developing infrastructures in Papua and realizing social justice for all Indonesians, as well as shorthening infrastructure gap between Java and Papua, between Western and Eastern regions of Indonesia, likewise between Central and Eastern regions,” the President firmly said.

Previously, on his remarks during the opening of National Congress and the 28th anniversary of the ICMI, President Jokowi said that role of Indonesian muslim intellectuals is vital for the unity of the people and nation.

The President instructed the ICMI to disseminate the importance of harmony, unity, and brotherhood to the people.

“I invite you to support the Government in uniting the people and the nation,” President Jokowi encouraged members of ICMI attending the event.

Also joining President Jokowi in the occasion were Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, ICMI General Chair Jimly Asshiddiqie, and Governor of Lampung Ridho Ficardo. (UN/BPMI Setpres/ES)
