Soekarno Hatta’s 3rd runway is technically ready to operate in mid-August this year, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi has announced.

“The Government will propose to start its operation in mid-August 2019,” the Minister said during site inspection at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten province, Sunday (21/7).

Budi added that the new runway can already be operated; yet, the Government decided to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and inform the airlines first since only certain aircraft can use the runway.

The Minister went on to say that the runway expansion will increase flight volume from currently 81 take off-landing in one hour to 114 take off-landing. The runway currently spans 2,500 meters and will be expand to 3,000 meters by November this year.

“Today, the capacity of the existing runways in Soekarno Hatta Airport is 81 take off-landing per hour. Thus, the Government is building the 3rd runway to increase its capacity to 114 take off-landing to provide better service,” the Minister said, adding that once the 3,000-meter long runway is finished, the capacity will jump to 40 percent more.

“In September or October this year when the 3000-meter runway is finished, the capacity will increase to 100 million passengers per year,” Budi added.

During the inspection, Budi also attended the flight test on the new runway and a pilot (involved in the flight test) said it was clear (landing), meaning that the runway is fully ready.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport is Indonesia’s largest airport serving Greater Jakarta area. It is also the busiest airport in Southeast Asia serving around 63 million passengers per year
