Papua is priming up to host the 20th multi-sport event National Sports Week (PON),  which will be held in October this year.

“The preparations are underway. All that’s left is to solve minor issues. The venues, the construction of which is under the responsibilities of the PON Great Committee (PB PON) and the local governments, are estimated to be ready in March. The one under the responsibility of Ministry of Public Housing and Public Works will be completed in July,” Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali said in his press statement after a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Friday (17/1).

The Minister also stated that the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KONI) Chairman has confirmed that there are no longer crucial matters in the preparation, including contingent participation.

“The Papua provincial government has assured before the President that the organizing of this edition of PON will be carried out well and will hopefully be a success and be held in a safe condition,” he said.

The preparation is jointly made by Ministry of Youth and Sports, KONI, PON Great Committee, and also some assistance requested to NOC (National Olympic Committee) Head Raja Sapta Oktohari.

“Raja Sapta Oktohari has led a committee during the Asian Para Games, so we assign him to organize the PON opening and closing ceremonies. Meanwhile, the games will be under the full responsibility of KONI,” the Minister concluded. (FID/TGH/EN)
