Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia at the Joint Press Release with President of New Development Bank, at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 25, 2025
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
May peace be upon us all,
Shalom,
Salve,
Om Swastiastu,
Namo Buddhaya,
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, we have the honor of hosting Her Excellency Dilma Rousseff, the President of the New Development Bank (NDB) who also served as President of Brazil from 2011 to 2016, Minister of Energy, and Minister Chief of Staff in the cabinet of Lula da Silva from 2005 to 2010.
We have discussed earlier. Moreover, NDB’s team has also met with the team from Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance. The New Development Bank is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS members in July 2014, marking its 10th anniversary last year. Its headquarters are located in Shanghai, China, with regional offices, including one in Africa.
The NDB is established with an objective to finance sustainable development projects and stimulate economy in developing countries. The Bank has an initial authorized capital of US$100 billion which was contributed by the founding members. Indonesia is invited to join the NDB. The Government has discussed it and the team from the Ministry of Finance has also conducted some evaluations. After deliberation with the Ministry of Finance, the Indonesian Government has decided to join the New Development Bank.
I think it was the points of note during the meeting.
So, Your Excellency. I expressed to the public that we had a very good meeting, very intensive, and extensive discussion. We discussed the long-term, middle-term, and short-term plans and programs of the Indonesian Government. And we also discussed examples of experiences in your country of Brazil and other countries. And we see many common, common threats, common experiences. And I also mentioned that your team and the Indonesian team have been discussing the invitation, your invitation to invite Indonesia to be a member of the New Development Bank. And after evaluation by our Minister of Finance and discussion, I have decided, on behalf of the Indonesian Government, to join the New Development Bank and to follow the procedures and the requirements that have been given to us.
So once again, thank you very much for inviting us to join NDB. I think this new multilateral development bank can be a strong booster to accelerate our transformation strategy.
Thank you very much.
