Statement of the President of the Republic of Indonesia at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, 30 November 2020, on Atrocities in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi Province

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

I strongly condemn the inhuman and uncivilized attack that has killed four of our fellow citizens in the violence committed in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. This barbaric act is clearly aimed at creating provocation and terror in our society and destroying the unity and harmony among the nation’s citizens.

I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. This is a humanitarian tragedy and the Government will provide assistance to the families.

I have instructed Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to thoroughly investigate the perpetrators’ networks and investigate the networks to its roots. I have also instructed Chief of the Polri and Commander of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) to be more vigilant.

Once again, I reiterate that there is no room for terrorism in our country.

Finally, I appeal to all people across the nation to remain calm and maintain our unity but also remain vigilant. We must unite against terrorism.
