President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ordered Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno to promote tourist destinations in the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra where the 21st National Games (PON) will take place.

“The President has ordered Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to prepare promotion for tourism in those provinces and neighboring regions and to ensure the 2024 National Games can stimulate the economy, bring positive impacts to business sector, and create job opportunities,” Sandiaga said in a press statement after attending a limited meeting led by President Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (10/09).

He went on to say that besides Lake Toba, North Sumatra province also has ecotourism destination Bukit Lawang, which is famous for its orangutan sanctuary. In Aceh, the ministry will integrate religious tourism in that province with the commemoration of twenty years of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

According to him, the ministry will prepare the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2024 National Games. He also expressed hope that the event can increase the number of tourist visits to super priority tourism destinations (DPSP) by 10-15 percent.

“The event will improve tourist visits in terms of quality and mobility since the PON will be held in several regencies,” he added.

In addition, the ministry will also ensure the availability of accommodation for the contingents and supporters. (MAY/UN) (RAS/MMB)
