Ukraine Supports Indonesia to be the Candidate of UNSC 2019-2020

After President Joko Widodo’s meeting with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta (5/8), Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said that in the meeting, both Presidents majorly discussed the efforts to enhance economic cooperation.

“Both Presidents have agreed to restart joint economic commission meeting next year. This commission has not held meeting for several years,” the Minister said.

The Minister stated that there are a number of cooperation sectors that need further discussion at the economic commission, such as issues in agriculture and tourism sectors.

“The point is trade and investment sectors have high potential because the products of each country do not compete each other,” the Minister added.

On the interview, the Minister of Foreign Affairs also said that the President of Ukraine had expressed his support for Indonesia to be the candidate of United Nations (UN) Security Council for 2019-2020 period.

At the end of the interview, the Minister gave additional explanations about the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), i.e.:

  1. Visa-free facility for diplomatic as well as service passports’ holders;
  2. Diplomatic training. There will be exchange of diplomats and they will be trained at each country’s diplomatic training center.
  3. In agriculture sector, there will be cooperation on agriculture research and technology, exchange of experts in agriculture sector and agriculture product sample, cooperation in livestock sector, animals and plants quarantine, development of food products, investment in agriculture sector, etc.
  4. In defence sector, there will be exchange visit, cooperation in defence and logistic industries, and information exchange in defence as well as military sectors. (DND/EN) (MMB/YM/Naster)
