President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called on residents in Riau province who have received social forestry decrees to fully utilize the land for productive purposes.

“I leave it up to you to manage the lands,” President Jokowi said in his introductory remarks at the Distribution of Social Forestry Decree at Sultan Syarif Hasyim Forest Park in Siak regency, Riau province, Friday (21/2).

According to the President, the recipients can cultivate the lands by planting crops such as cassava, sugar palm, or develop them into ecotourism areas since the decrees will be revoked if the lands are not utilized.

President Jokowi also pointed out that the decree distribution aims to minimize land disputes between individuals and between individuals with companies.

The President also warned against handing over the decrees to other people.

The Head of State also urged Ministry of the Environment and Forestry to provide assistance to local business groups to boost their productivity.

“Do make a financial plan to manage the lands. Do not let the lands be unproductive,” he said, adding that the recipients could also make capital loans under the People’s Business Credit (KUR) scheme through state-owned banks. (RSF/EN)
