The role of security and defense system should be strengthened to protect the entire nation, state and all citizens in facing the increasing global challenges, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has said.

According to him, the defense and security challenges faced by various countries, including Indonesia, are increasingly complex and dynamic.

These challenges can come from military, non-military, and hybrid aspects; thus, he added, it is necessary to strengthen the defense and security sector.

During the Closing of National Conference on Public Security and Defense System, at Sentul, West Java province, Friday (18/6), Ma’ruf also said that one of the efforts to strengthen the defense and security system is by providing training to all components of the nation, both military and non-military, so that all parties can collaborate effectively in facing challenges.

“All components of the nation, including the Government, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), the National Police, and the entire community need to be provided with adequate preparations so that all threats and challenges that may arise can be handled properly,” he said.

The trainings, the Vice President added, must be carried out in an inclusive and collaborative manner by all components of the nation.

“The preparedness and vigilance should be carried out in an inclusive and collaborative manner by all components of the nation, and require high concern, innovation, and creativity, to make the most of the available national resources effectively and efficiently,” he remarked.

Ma’ruf also mentioned about the various reserve components and supporting components as listed in Government Regulation (PP) Number 3 of 2021 on Management of National Resources for National Defense.

He pointed out that the management of these resources must be carried out from an early age to further strengthen the Indonesian defense system in facing the existing challenges.

“These various components are expected to be part of a mechanism and the frontline in society in protecting and preventing the infiltration of values that are not in accordance with the ideology of Pancasila, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, such as intolerance, radicalism, and extremism,” he explained.

On that occasion, the Vice President also expressed hope that the event can provide real benefits for the entire Indonesian people and the nation.

“The documents resulting from this conference are of very strategic value in encouraging a national-scale movement to optimize the implementation of the defense and security system in dealing with threats to the Republic of Indonesia in the 21st century. I am calling on participants to take a real action on the result of this event and can provide real benefits for the country,” he said.

For the record, the national conference, which was held for five days starting from 14-18 June 2021, featured speakers from a number of institutions, including representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the TNI, the National Police, other government ministries / agencies, local governments, defense industries, and universities.

The event was aimed to exchange views on the concept of security and defense system and its implementation in the 21st century. (Vice President Secretariat / UN) (EST / EP)
