Relief efforts in quake-hit Palu and the surrounding areas in Central Sulawesi province are still in the evacuation stage, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.

“We are now still carrying out the evacuation process, including here at Roa-roa Hotel, where 30 people are still allegedly trapped under the rubble,” the President said on Wednesday (3/10) during the inspection at the hotel site.

According to the President, the evacuation process will still be under way until all the victims are rescued.

For the record, the hotel, which is located in the heart of Palu, collapsed after the 7.7 magnitude quake and the tsunami hit the city. It is reported that many hotel guests could not escape when the disasters struck.

After inspecting the evacuation process at the collapsed hotel, President Jokowi and his entourage continued inspecting quake-affected areas in Donggala regency, where the President talked with the affected residents and distributed aid.

Joining the President during the visit were Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani, Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir, Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, and Special Staff to the President Adita Irawati.
