Ministry of Transportation, on Friday (27/08), held a soft launch of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) Train at YIA Train Station, Kulonprogo, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

The airport trains will shorten the travel time from Yogyakarta City to the airport to only 40 minutes.

According to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the airport trains will be an alternative option for transportation modes besides the current options. “The airport trains will make YIA an airport that accommodates connectivity needs to not only regions in Yogyakarta but also regions in Central Java,” he said.

The airport trains are expected to improve the economy and help the community accessibility in an environmentally friendly manner.

“Yogyakarta is a student city and a national strategic tourist destination. So, the airport trains are prepared to increase tourist visits to this region,” said Luhut.

Luhut also expressed appreciation to Ministry of Transportation who has successfully completed the construction of the YIA Train amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Please pay attention to operational maintenance and make a commitment to always improve safety and security as well as provide comfort for users,” he added.

According to Ministry of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, the airport trains project is a part of the National Strategic Projects which according to the President’s Vision and Mission, must continue amid the pandemic.

The commercial operations, said the Minister, will immediately be carried out and promotional tariffs will be provided for the users.

Following the safety checks of the airport trains, the trains will operate commercially on September 2021. (PR of Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment/PR of Ministry of Transportation/UN) (FI/LW)
