Gov’t Reaffirms Commitment to Farmland Protection and Food Security

Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/ National Land Agency Nusron Wahid at press conference following his meeting with President Prabowo Subianto, at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday (01/28)
President Prabowo Subianto Wednesday (01/28) at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, met with Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency Nusron Wahid to discuss national food security and self-sufficiency.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, the Minister explained that approximately 225,000 hectares of farmland had been converted into industrial and residential areas during 2019-2024.
“In the meeting, we reported that the ministry has taken several measures and consulted with the President. Alhamdulillah, the President agreed,” said Nusron.
For the record, these measures were taken according to Presidential Regulation Number 12 of 2025 on the Mid-term National Development Plan 2025-2030, which mandates the protection of sustainable agricultural land (LP2B).
“Under Presidential Regulation Number 12 of 2025 on the Mid-term National Development Plan 2025-2030, the farmland designated as LP2B, or sustainable agricultural land, must be preserved as farmland and should constitute at least 87 percent of the total paddy field area (LBS),” he added.
The Government has introduced a temporary measure to classify all paddy fields (LBS) as sustainable agricultural land (LP2B) in regions whose spatial plans have not yet allocated at least 87 percent of LBS as LP2B.
This policy will remain in effect until regional authorities formally designate which areas will be maintained as LP2B and which may be converted.
“Regions that have incorporated LP2B into their spatial plans but have yet to meet the 87 percent minimum are required to revise their spatial plans within the next six months. This revision is intended to ensure at least 87 percent of paddy fields are protected as farmland,” he continued.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening spatial planning policies and land management to safeguard national farmland as a strategic asset for food security and people’s welfare. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (RD/EP)
