President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the integrated energy infrastructure of Pertamina Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) at the Head Office of the state-owned oil company PT Pertamina (Persero) Refinery Unit V in Balikpapan city, East Kalimantan province, on Monday (01/12). The inauguration marked an important milestone in strengthening national energy resilience and sovereignty.

The inauguration of the Balikpapan RDMP project stood as a tangible symbol of strategic synergy between the Government and State-Owned Enterprises in realizing energy self-sufficiency. The successful completion of the project demonstrated the nation’s capability to manage large-scale strategic projects in accordance with international standards.

In his remarks, the President stated that the inauguration served as one of the historic events for the country. The Head of State expressed his pride in the achievement and conveyed his appreciation to all parties involved.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to all elements and personnel who have put tireless effort to achieve this accomplishment, including engineers, workers, security personnel, local governments, management, as well as the people of Balikpapan and East Kalimantan. This is a highly pivotal achievement for the state and the nation,” the President said.

The Balikpapan RDMP project had a total investment value of US$7.4 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp123 trillion. Through the implementation of the project, crude oil processing capacity had increased significantly from 260 thousand barrels to 360 thousand barrels per day.

Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia, stated in his report that the increase in capacity had been accompanied by improvement in product quality as well. The refinery is currently capable of producing fuel that meets Euro 5 standard and thus is cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

“[The fuel] had been developed to meet Euro 5 standard, [hence] it supports the transition toward net-zero emissions. Through this RDMP project, we would be able to save foreign exchange by approximately Rp60 trillion,” said the Minister. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (YA/TM)
