President Prabowo Subianto greets people in Miangas, Talaud island, North Sulawesi, on Saturday (5/9).

President Prabowo Subianto announced his initiative to develop fishers’ villages as part of a program to improve their welfare in the coastal and border areas. This initiative was conveyed by the President on Saturday (5/9) during his visit to Miangas, Talaud island, North Sulawesi province.

On the occasion, the President explained that the Government, through Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, will begin the development of the fisher village at Miangas immediately. This development includes the supporting facilities for fishers’ activities, ranging from a cold storage to a fuel station.

“Today we delivered assistance of a big ship that weighs 15 gross tons. This is remarkably big. How many of the ship’s crew? 5 persons? And we will also build a designated fisher village,” he said.

The President explained that the village will also be equipped with various facilities to support the fishers’ productivity in Miangas. The Government aimed to secure a well-stocked fish catch with high economic value.

“There will also be an ice maker machine and cold storage. Also, a fuel station, particularly diesel,” he said.

According to the President, the development of the fisher village in Miangas is part of the national program to improve fishers’ welfare. The Government is set to launch thousands of fisher villages across Indonesia by the end of the year.

“We will massively improve the fishers’ welfare across Indonesia, and this will begin this year. So, this year, in December, we will launch 1,386 fisher villages across Indonesia. Hopefully, there will be one more fisher village in the near future,” he said.

The President also expressed optimism that the airport in Miangas will help the distribution of fishery products to other places. With the support of infrastructure and facilities, the President hoped that the welfare of coastal people in Miangas would improve.

“You will have a decent fisher village. There is an airport, so you can distribute more of the fishery products, to get more income,” he said.

The modern fisher village in Miangas marks the Government’s concern for border areas as an important measure of economic growth and national sovereignty. The program aims not only to improve physical development, but also to open new economic opportunities, advance seafood security, and improve people’s welfare in the foremost islands of Indonesia.   (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (RD/LW)
