Strengthening Support for Palestine, Indonesia Proposes Five Concrete Steps

The Indonesian Government continues to strengthen its diplomatic efforts to support Palestinian independence, uphold international law, and promote a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. This commitment was reaffirmed at the Ministerial Meeting on Jerusalem in Amman, Jordan, Wednesday (08/05).

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir, who attended the meeting representing Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, stressed that violence by Israeli citizens and violations of international law by Israel in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and the West Bank, must not be allowed or normalized.

At the meeting, Indonesia once again reaffirmed its support for the Hashemite Custodianship over the holy sites in Jerusalem, including Al-Haram Al-Sharif, as well as the independence of the State of Palestine in accordance with international law.

“Indonesia urges the international community to no longer use old approaches. We must no longer allow Israel’s violations or respond to them in a fragmented manner. Division is a gap that Israel has always taken advantage of,” the Deputy Minister said.

As part of these efforts, Indonesia proposed five concrete steps: building a joint strategy based on unity; taking steps to uphold international law and the rulings of the International Court of Justice; expanding international recognition of Palestine; strengthening efforts to protect the Al-Aqsa Mosque; and supporting the reconstruction of Gaza, Palestinian national unity, and the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

These steps represent the implementation of President Prabowo Subianto’s firm position, which places support for Palestinian independence among Indonesia’s foreign policy priorities.

The Government also continues to encourage the involvement of the international community, including Global South countries, in building a stronger coalition to support Palestine.

“The Global South is with us. Even countries that have been close to Israel have imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank,” the Deputy Minister said.

The Ministerial Meeting in Amman was attended by foreign ministers, deputy foreign ministers, and officials from Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, Türkiye, Tunisia, Somalia, Pakistan, Morocco, Palestine, Malaysia, and Qatar, as well as the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

The meeting adopted a Joint Statement that, among other points, supports the strengthening of Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem, rejects unilateral actions to relocate diplomatic missions to Jerusalem, and calls for media campaigns to publicize the impact of Israel’s actions on regional and international peace and security.
