During his state visit to Egypt, President Prabowo Subianto Wednesday (12/18) met with Indonesian students from Al-Azhar University at the Al-Azhar Convention Center in Cairo.

Before nearly 2,000 students, President Prabowo underscored the importance of determination, perseverance, and hard work in pursuing knowledge for the nation’s advancement. He also encouraged students to take inspiration from great Islamic figures who uphold the values of inclusivity, unity, and tolerance.

“I am grateful that you chose to study at Al-Azhar University, a historic Islamic university that teaches peaceful, moderate Islamic lessons; a university that does not teach hatred and does not teach to find fault in others, but rather finding common ground,” the President said.

President Prabowo also reminded students to continue to respect diversity, be it at home or abroad, citing the example of the fourth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid, commonly known as Gus Dur, who is renowned as a Muslim figure who can embrace all people in Indonesia.

“I know Gus Dur closely. He is a Muslim leader, the Chairperson of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Executive Board, and comes from a great sheikh family, the tebu ireng family. Nevertheless, he has a vast mind and a kind soul. He embraces all so that he becomes a famous inclusive Muslim figure and protector of all minorities,” he said.

The Head of State also encouraged the students to pursue knowledge and do good for the nation. “Let us work with each other, with all nations, other religions, tribes, and races, since we share the same ideals and interests. We want to find a good life in this world, meaning a life free from fear and threats,” he added.

To conclude his speech, President Prabowo reminded the students of the importance of building the nation through education and hard work. The Head of State also prompted the students to give their utmost to the nation, people, and state.

“It is not easy to attend school in a foreign country and far from family. I believe you are patient and persistent when facing hardships. Happy studying and good luck,” the President remarked. (BPMI Presidential Secretariat/ABD) (GWH/MUR)
