President Prabowo Subianto underlines the Government’s commitment in tackling national waste issue seriously and in an integrated manner at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of Central and Regional Governments.

President Prabowo Subianto has affirmed the Government’s commitment to addressing national waste issue seriously and in an integrated manner. During his briefing at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of Central and Regional Governments, the President revealed plans to launch the Indonesia ASRI Movement (aman/secure, sehat/healthy, resik/clean, indah/beautiful) as a national initiative to create a clean and neat environment.

“What does ‘resik’ mean? It means clean and neat. This is just a name. The point is all government agencies must lead a clean-up operation for the public, including students. It can be done every morning for 10-15 minutes or half an hour. If hundreds or thousands of people do it, it will be finished quickly,” said the President at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor regency, West Java province, Monday (2/2).

The waste issue, according to the President, has become a crucial problem in various regions. In his briefing, the Head of State explained that nearly all final disposal sites (TPA) in Indonesia are projected to exceed capacity by 2028, or even sooner.

“Waste is becoming a problem. It is projected that almost all TPAs will face overcapacity in 2028, or even sooner,” he stated.

To address this challenge, the Government will soon begin constructing 34 waste-to-energy projects in 34 cities this year. In addition to building these projects, the President underlined the importance of synergy among all stakeholders, both at the central and regional levels, to overcome the waste problem.

“Waste is a disaster, waste is a disease. The Government will act and support you all. We will start the projects immediately. As soon as there is funding, we will prioritize this. How can we do promotion, boost tourism if our environment is dirty and filthy,” said the President.

In addition to waste management, President Prabowo also introduced the idea of the “gentengisasi” (roof-tiling) project as part of efforts to beautify residential areas. He explained that the widespread use of corrugated iron roofs makes residential areas hot and less aesthetically pleasing.

“Corrugated iron is hot for the residents and it also rusts. So, it is impossible for Indonesia to be beautiful if all roofs are made of corrugated iron,” said the President, while hoping that in 2-3 years, Indonesia will no longer show rust. Rust is a symbol of degeneration, not a symbol of revival. Indonesia must rise, Indonesia must be strong, Indonesia must be beautiful. Our people must be happy,” he remarked. (BPMI) (EST/MMB)
