Over 12,000 Runners Join Merdeka Run 2026 to Celebrate Independence

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that Merdeka Run 2026 reflected the spirit of Indonesians in celebrating the month of independence through sports. This year, more than 12,000 runners took part in the running event, which was held in Jakarta on Saturday (08/29).
“As we are in the month of independence in August, we celebrate Indonesia’s independence alongside more than 12,000 runners,” he said in his written statement.
This year’s Merdeka Run offered an 8-kilometer route for general participants. Thousands of runners from various backgrounds ran together in celebration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
The event also provided opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in a 2.5-kilometer route, which further strengthened the spirit of inclusiveness in the independence celebrations.
“Let’s everybody move, stay healthy, and be enthusiastic. Freedom!!” the Cabinet Secretary concluded.
For the record, Merdeka Run 2026 is part of the series in the commemoration of the independence that directly involved the public participation through sports. It serves as a space for people from diverse backgrounds and with different abilities to come together, stay healthy, and embrace the spirit of togetherness.
