President Jokowi Welcomes OECD Secretary-General at Bogor Palace

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday (05/28) had a meeting with Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java.

“Today’s meeting is the second meeting between Mr. President and the OECD Secretary-General regarding Indonesia’s accession process, following the first meeting in August last year. The meeting aims to provide the updated information regarding the accession process and the measures to be taken by the Indonesian Government,” Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said.

Airlangga said that President Jokowi had issued Presidential Decree Number 17 of 2024 on the Establishment of the National Team for Preparation and Acceleration of Indonesia’s Membership in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development/OECD. The OECD National Team consists of directors, staffers and secretariat. The team is led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, assisted by Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Based on the President’s directives, the team is committed to achieving full membership within three years.

Airlangga also said that Indonesia would take all necessary measures to achieve full OECD membership, including making an initial memorandum within the next 250 days.

Airlangga further said that the OECD would conduct a survey of Indonesia’s economic situation, as part of the measures to improve investment capacity of Indonesia and make it on a par with members of the OECD.

“It is part of OECD support to improve the investment climate and ensure that Indonesia can be equal to OECD countries in terms of legislation, so that investors will increase their investment in Indonesia,” he said.

In the meantime, Vice Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara expressed hope that the initial memorandum, which is one of the prerequisites for Indonesia’s OECD full membership, can provide an overview of the economic reforms carried out by Indonesia.

“We hope that this initial memorandum will serve as a tool for Indonesia to show the world what Indonesia has achieved in reforming its economy,” he remarked. (TGH/ABD) (RI/MUR)
