Indonesia, Brazil to Strengthen Strategic Partnership, Accelerate Bilateral Cooperation

President Prabowo Subianto and President of the Federative Republic of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Thursday (10/23), witnessed the signing and exchange of memoranda of understanding and memoranda of agreement between the two countries at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

The signing and exchange of memoranda are part of the Brazilian President’s state visit to Indonesia, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two BRICS member states, aiming for more comprehensive and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships.

“Today, we will sign four agreements and MoUs that are quite important, and I hope this is proof that we have worked fast. I last met His Excellency in June. It is October now… August, September… it means that within two months, we have made great advances. I suppose—I believe that soon, we will produce better results,” President Prabowo stated during the bilateral meeting.

The memoranda of understanding and memoranda of agreement between government institutions of the two countries include several strategic sectors, as follows:

  1. Memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Mines and Energy of the Federative Republic of Brazil on energy and mining cooperation;
  2. Memorandum of understanding between the National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation of the Federative Republic of Brazil on science, technology, and innovation cooperation;
  3. Memorandum of understanding between the Indonesian Quarantine Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply of the Federative Republic of Brazil on cooperation in sanitary and phytosanitary actions and certifications;
  4. Memorandum of agreement between Statistics Indonesia and Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics on cooperation in statistics.

In addition to cooperation between government institutions, the state visit of President Lula da Silva to Indonesia also symbolized stronger business relations. Several memoranda of agreement between businesspeople from the two countries were signed as an initial step to explore opportunities for strategic cross-sector cooperation, namely:

  1. Memorandum of understanding between Indonesian sovereign wealth fund PT Danantara Investment Management (Persero) and food multinational company of Brazilian origin JBS N.V. on the exploration and negotiation of Transaction Plans;
  2. Memorandum of understanding between Indonesian state-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) and Brazilian private investment company J&F S.A. on cooperation in hydropower plant development study to support energy transition in Indonesia;
  3. Memorandum of understanding between Indonesian state-owned oil company PT Pertamina (Persero) and Brazilian oil company Fluxus Holding S.A. on the exploration of cooperation opportunities in the energy sector;
  4. Memorandum of understanding between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (APEX) on cooperation in trade promotion between Brazil and Indonesia.

The signing and exchange of all memoranda of understanding and memoranda of agreement were witnessed firsthand by official delegates of Indonesia and Brazil. This event reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to strengthen strategic partnerships and their position in advancing sustainable development on the global stage.
