Press Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the Adverse Impact of Online Gambling, at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, June 12, 2024
Journalist:
Sir, what are your thoughts on the increasing prevalence of online gambling? What is your response to this issue?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo):
I would like to specifically state do not gamble, do not gamble, do not gamble, whether offline or online. It is better if you save your money or use it as business capital. There have been many instances where gambling has led to the sales of assets, divorces, crimes, violence, and even loss of lives.
Gambling is not just about risking money, not just a game of chance with prizes. Gambling stakes the future, both personal, family, and our children’s future. On the other hand, the Government is seriously combating online gambling and until now more than 2.1 million online gambling sites have been shut down. The online gambling task force will soon be formed, and we hope it will accelerate the eradication of online gambling. But once again, online gambling is transnational, crossing countries, borders, and jurisdictions. Therefore, one of the most important defenses is the defense of our own society and individual defenses.
Therefore, I urge all religious leaders, community leaders, and the broader public to remind each other, monitor each other, and report any indications of online gambling. I think that’s all.
Journalist:
Thank you, Sir.
