Most provinces in Indonesia have distinctive sarong production such as weaving, songket, batik, and other technique of sarongs production that other nations do not have, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“Each province has different styles, motifs, colors, and philosophies,” President Jokowi said while visiting the 2019 Indonesian Sarong Festival held under the theme “Sarong as Cultural Identity and Unifier of the Nation” (as cited on merdeka.com) at the Southeast Plaza of Bung Karno, Senayan, Central Jakarta, Sunday (3/3).

The festival aims to support the Government’s programs in promoting Indonesia’s micro, small, medium enterprises and to arouse pride in wearing sarong as a cultural identity.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also expressed hope that there will be a certain day in a month for all people to wear sarongs. “It can be once a week, fortnightly, or once a month,” he added.

Cultural diversity in Indonesia should also be highly respected, the President added. (FID/AGG/ES)
