New Capital Has Yet to be Decided, President Jokowi Says

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has dismissed reports that East Kalimantan province will host Indonesia’s new capital.
According to the President, the location of the new capital has yet to be decided although the study regarding the relocation plan has entered final stage.
“We are still waiting for the result of the final study and we will announce it in time,” the President said in a statement at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Thursday (22/8).
For the record, in his state address on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence before the joint session of the Regional Representatives Council and the House of Representatives on Friday (16/8), the President Jokowi had requested for permission to relocate the capital.
“By asking for the blessings and grace of God the Almighty and blessings and supports from the distinguished members of the House of Representatives and members of the Regional Representatives Council, our national leaders, our national figures, and especially the whole Indonesian people, allow me to relocate our capital to the island of Kalimantan,” the President said.
According to the President, a capital is not only a symbol of national identity but also represents the advancement of the nation. “This move (relocating the capital) aims to create economic justice and equitability. This move aims to achieve the vision of an Advanced Indonesia – Indonesia that lasts forever,” he said.
President Jokowi announced in May that the Government would push ahead with the plan to relocate the capital city outside Java, citing the need to address overpopulation on the country’s most populous island and to ensure more equitable development.
The President has also visited two recommended places in the island of Kalimantan considered as alternative locations for the new capital, namely Bukit Soeharto in East Kalimantan province and the Triangle Area in Central Kalimantan province. (HIM/OJI/ES)
