Indonesia Witnesses Signing of US-Taliban Comprehensive Peace Agreement

In a bid to contribute to Afghanistan peace process, the Indonesian Government witnessed the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between Taliban and the US.

The signing was done in Doha, the capital of Qatar on Saturday (29/2).

The signing of the agreement was attended by Germany and the United Kingdom representatives, as well as Foreign Ministers from nine states, including Qatar, the United States, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Norway, Turkey, Oman, and Pakistan.

For the record, the Indonesia Government began its contribution to the Afghan peace process three years ago as requested by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

In order to build trust, the Government has strengthened relations with all parties involved, including Taliban.

Regarding the cooperation, the Indonesian Government has focused on ulama and women’s empowerment. Indonesia has also hosted a trilateral ulama meeting between Afghanistan-Indonesia-Pakistan in 2018 and a bilateral meeting between Indonesian-Aghan women on women’s empowerment in 2019.

The US-Taliban agreement itself covers four important components, including counter-terrorism, full withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan within 14 months, the launching of intra-Afghan negotiations and a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire.

In the meantime, the Afghan capital Kabul has announced the joint declaration between the Afghanistan Government and the United States, encouraged by the US-Taliban peace agreement.

The initial measure is expected to pave the way for Afghanistan peace. The commitment from all parties is needed to continue the effort for the sake of the people of Afghanistan so they can live in peace.

A number of progress in various fields, such as democracy and women’s empowerment should be also continued and used as an asset for intra-afghan dialogue. (Kemlu.go.id/EN)
