Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

We are grateful that finally the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting can be held today. Since I made a phone call to the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam on 23 March 2021, together with the Chair, Indonesia has made the best effort to ensure that the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting can be held.

During the meeting, I have delivered several points.

First, the development of the situation in Myanmar is unacceptable and must not continue. The use of force must stop and democracy, stability, and peace in Myanmar must be restored immediately. The interests of the Myanmar people must always be the priority.

Second, in the meeting, I also conveyed the importance of the Myanmar Military Leader to make the following commitment:

The first commitment is to stop the use of force by the Myanmar military. In the meantime, all parties must exercise restraint so that the tension can be defused.

The second commitment is that an inclusive dialogue process must begin, political prisoners must be released immediately, and the ASEAN Special Envoy, namely the Secretary General and the Chair of the ASEAN, must be appointed to encourage dialogue with all parties in Myanmar.

The third commitment is the opening of access to humanitarian assistance from the ASEAN, which is coordinated by the Secretary General of the ASEAN together with the AHA Center (The ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management).

And Indonesia is committed to safeguarding the follow-up of the commitment so that the political crisis in Myanmar can be resolved immediately.

We are grateful that the statement delivered by Indonesia was in line with the statements delivered by the ASEAN leaders, so it can be said that the ASEAN leaders have reached a consensus. The ASEAN Secretary General has conveyed five points of consensus which will later be delivered by the Chair or the Secretary General of the ASEAN. The content of the consensus is more or less the same as that of national statement I have delivered.

That concludes my statement.

I thank you.

Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. (RI/MMB)
