President Jokowi Urges Pertamina, PLN to Prepare Energy Transition

The transition to eco-friendly energy is one of the Government’s measures to control the climate change. To that end, the Government urged state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina and state-owned electricity company PT PLN to immediately prepare for energy transition from fossil energy to green energy.

The statement was made by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo when delivering directives to board of commissioners and board of directors of PT Pertamina and PT PLN at Bogor Presidential Palace on Tuesday (16/11/2021).

“We all know that the energy transition can not be held up. Therefore, the masterplan, grand design must start to be prepared. What we will do next year, in the next two year, and in the next five years,” the President said.

The Head of State went on to say that the preparation of energy transition to the green energy is a must. To that end, he ordered in his directives to spend the time wisely to strengthen energy transition’s basis.

According to the President, Indonesia’s largest energy supply is 67 percent mainly based on coal, 15 percent based on fossil fuel, and 8 percent based on gas. If Indonesia can carry out energy transition of its national energy supply, he continued, it will have an impact on balance of payments profits that can affect the Indonesian currency Rupiah.

“The energy supply from PT PLN will be absorbed and the number of oil imports by PT Pertamina will decrease,” President Jokowi added.

In the field of investment, the President appealed to his ranks to facilitate investors who want to invest in PT Pertamina and PT PLN considering a lot of numbers of potential investment for the companies.

“Investment decisions may be made by the companies, but the Government also has a big strategy to bring this state to a goal that we aspire together,” the Head of State continued.

Furthermore, President Jokowi said that the world is rapidly changing so that the big plans we are carrying out can be able to adjust to the current circumstances, adding that, the President hopes that the investment opportunities should be open as widely as possible.

“Once again, the investment opportunities in PT Pertamina and PT PLN are widely open if all of you are open to the investment,” he remarked. (PRESIDENTIAL SECRETARIAT/UN) (AP/LW)
