Press Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia on Tragedy at Kanjuruhan Stadium, October 2, 2022, at Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java Province

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

I would like to extend my deepest condolences for the passing of 129 people in the football tragedy in Kanjuruhan, Malang, East Java province.

I have asked Minister of Health and Governor of East Java to monitor, particularly medical services, for victims who are receiving medical treatment in hospitals, so they obtain the best service.

I have also ordered Minister Youth and Sports, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) Chief, and Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to conduct a thorough evaluation regarding the implementation of the football match, as well as the security procedures for its implementation.

Especially to the Polri Chief, I ask to conduct an investigation and thoroughly investigate this case. For this reason, I also ordered PSSI to temporarily suspend League 1 until evaluation and improvement of security procedures are carried out.

I deeply regret this tragedy and I hope this is the last tragedy of football in the country. Don’t let another human tragedy like this happen in the future.

We must continue to maintain sportsmanship, a sense of humanity, and a sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian nation.
