Vice President Ma’ruf Amin Thursday (12/22) inaugurated the 2nd ASEAN Islamic Conference at Hilton Hotel in Nusa Dua, Badung regency, Bali province.

In his opening remarks, the VP expressed optimism that by being the best community, Muslims will be able to face various global challenges, including wars between countries, economic turmoil, energy and food crises, natural disasters, and humanitarian conflicts.

“Islamic teachings promote the birth of khairu ummah generation or the best community,” he said as quoted from the official website of the VP office.

The VP pointed out that Surah Ali ‘Imran verse 110 in the Quran defines khairu ummah as Muslims who do good deeds (amar ma’ruf), avoid evil deeds (nahi munkar), and have faith in Allah.

Khairu ummah is an exemplary community that brings benefits and upholds justice,” he said, adding that doing good deeds and avoiding evil deeds are not merely about worship but also about principles that need to be implemented in all aspects of life.

“Muslims must do good deeds in all aspects, be it ideology, politics, economy, society, culture, or the environment,” he said.

According to the VP, every individual, community, and institution can actualize these values. In fact, the Government is committed to improving public healthcare service, expanding access to and improving the quality of education, as well as creating social safety net to end poverty.

The VP also reminded Muslims to always be in the vanguard to abolish all kinds of evil they face in their daily life, including to fight against all forms of hoax, disinformation, intolerance, and extremism that are likely to cause division.

“In practice, amar ma’ruf and nahi mungkar must certainly go hand in hand, yet we must keep it in moderation. It is in line with the principle of Islam which emphasizes the importance of being the people in the middle (ummatan wasathan) and excess of everything will lead to no good or even to disaster,” he said.

The VP also expressed hope that the event adopting the theme of “Khaira Ummah” will give rise to cooperation prospects and strengthen the cooperation of ASEAN countries and Saudi Arabia in various aspects, especially in education and research to make a generation of excellent and competitive people with noble character.
