President Jokowi Affirms Commitment to Build Prosperous Country

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to build a prosperous and sustainable country with an inclusive economy by constantly working towards achieving zero carbon emissions before 2060.

“While enjoying robust economic growth, there has been a substantial reduction in poverty and inequality as well along with a continuous creation of jobs,” the President said in his remarks at the World Leaders on the United Nations Climate Summit (COP28), at the Al Ghafat Plenary, Expo City Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, Friday (12/01).

On that occasion, the President underlined several measures that Indonesia has undertaken to reduce carbon emissions, including a commitment to enhance forest and other land use (FOLU) management and expedite the transition to new renewable energy sources.

“Regarding FOLU management, Indonesia is actively preserving and expanding mangrove forests and rehabilitating forests and land,” he said.

In addition, Indonesia has achieved a notable reduction in deforestation rates, reaching the lowest point in the last 20 years.

According to the President, this accomplishment has been complemented by the widespread establishment of nurseries, which are proving to be effective in large-scale production.

“We are also developing large-scale nurseries with a total capacity of around 75 million seeds per year, and the production is starting to yield positive results,” he said, adding that Indonesia is also working to speed up the development of new renewable energy sources.

“Indonesia has been intensifying the optimization of new renewable energy sources including solar, water, wind, geothermal, and ocean current, and developing biodiesel, bioethanol, and bioavtur fuels,” he added.

In this regard, the President extended an invitation to various stakeholders, including bilateral partners, private investors, philanthropic organizations, and friendly countries to collaborate on funding initiatives aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060.

“The Paris Agreement and the attainment of net zero emissions targets can only be realized through addressing the challenge of funding the energy transition. The solution to global issues lies in this factor,” the President remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RIF/MMB)
