Criminal Assets Confiscation Bill Must Be Passed Immediately: President Jokowi
Corruption is an extraordinary crime that hampers development, hurts the nation’s economy, and brings adversity to the people, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
“I reckon that the finalization of Criminal Assets Confiscation Bill must be done immediately. Such mechanism will help recover state losses and bring deterrent effects,” the President said during the commemoration of 2023 World Anti-Corruption Day at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (12/12).
The President also encouraged the finalization of Restrictions on Currency Transactions Bill to boost transparency and accountability of banking transactions.
He also underscored that strengthening regulations is needed since there are still many corruption cases in the country involving legislative, judicial, and executive officials.
“I noted that during 2004-2022 there were 344 leaders and members of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), including Speaker of the DPR and Speaker of the DPRD who were imprisoned for corruption cases. There are also 38 ministers and heads of institutions, 24 governors and 162 regents/mayors, 31 judges, including constitutional judges. Apart from that, there are also 8 commissioners, including commissioner of the General Election Commission (KPU), the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) and the Judicial Commission (KY). Also 415 from the private sector and 363 from bureaucrats. The figures are enormous,” he said.
A total evaluation, President Jokowi continued, is necessary to tackle corruption in the country.
“I appeal to all of you to join hands to prevent corruption and provide a deterrent effect to officials and bureaucrats who commit corruption,” President Jokowi remarked. (DND/UN) (GWH/EP)
