Gov’t Aims to Absorb 39,000 Workers via Labor-Intensive Programs in Railway Sector

Ministry of Transportation has set its aim to absorb around 39,000 workers of labor-intensive programs in the railway sector in Central Java, this year, with a budget allocation of Rp3.2 billion.

“Based on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s directives, labor-intensive programs in the transportation sector show our commitment to helping people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, this aims to accelerate national economic recovery,” Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said during an inspection of labor-intensive work in Lempuyangan Station, Yogyakarta, Sunday (14/02).

In 2021, labor-intensive programs will be one of the national priority programs pushed by the Government, as the benefits can be directly felt by the people. Implementation of labor-intensive programs in the transportation sector includes maintenance and construction of terminals, airports, seaports, railways, and transportation safety facilities.

In detail, labor-intensive activities carried out in three railway infrastructure projects in Central Java include: first, the electrification project for the Yogyakarta-Solo Railroad which can potentially absorb 2,520 workers; second, the electrification project for the Solo Balapan – Solo Jebres Railroad which can absorb 1,840 workers; third, the construction of the NYIA Kulonprogo Airport Railroad for 2019-2021 which can absorb a workforce of 34,650 people.
