President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered his Cabinet, regional governments, and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to join hands to integrate public transportation modes in Greater Jakarta, which includes the cities of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.

“The President ordered us to integrate the transportation system in Greater Jakarta so SOEs, regional governments, and the Central Government must not work individually. There should be one organization to create an integrated transportation system,” Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said following a limited meeting led by President Jokowi at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday (09/27).

According to Luhut, the President ordered that the organization be established within one month and in integrating transportation modes, there will be regulations on transit pass or monthly ticket payment.

“There will be regulations on how people buy transit passes, monthly tickets for transportation. For example, people from Bogor take the LRT, then maybe they can transfer to Transjakarta buses, and so on. Or people from Bandung take the high-speed train to Jakarta, and transfer to LRT, before transferring to a bus,” he said.

The President, Luhut added, has ordered his Cabinet to formulate a subsidy scheme for various modes of transportation to incentivize the public to commute by public transportation.

“We will limit the use of private vehicles by improving public transportation and making it comfortable and charging a very affordable fare,” he remarked. (MAY/UN) (DH/EP)
