Indonesia, Viet Nam Agree to Enhance Strategic Ties

Indonesia and Viet Nam agreed to enhance cooperation on defense and security sectors including defense industries development, joint military exercise as well as joint patrol. This agreement was achieved during a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and General Secretary of the Viet Nam Communist Party Tô Lâm at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (03/10).

“On defense and security sectors, we agree to enhance cooperation on defense industries and joint exercise of our two countries, officers exchange as well as joint patrol,” President Prabowo said.

Defense cooperation is pivotal to build Indonesia–Viet Nam comprehensive strategic partnership. Furthermore, the two countries also reiterated their support for ASEAN stability and peace as the basic foundation for economic growth and people’s prosperity.

“Our two countries have agreed that peace and stability are the key of regional prosperity. We agree to strengthen ties with other ASEAN partners,” he further confirmed.

Indonesia and Viet Nam also agreed to boost cooperation on fishery industries and to enhance collaboration between the two countries’ central banks. To mark the strengthening of bilateral relations, President Prabowo announced his purpose to visit Viet Nam as a return visit.

“I have announced that I would like to pay a visit to Viet Nam soon and I hope that we can sign implementing agreement on economic zone,” he explained.

The President said that the deal on economic zone is an important achievement considering that it took 12 years to conclude the negotiation. He also expressed hope that the process of ratification at legislative level of the two countries could be soon completed.

“We hope that ratification by the Indonesian parliament will be completed in April after Eid, while Vietnamese legislative can also complete the ratification soon. Insya Allah, I will sign the [implementing] agreement in Hanoi during my state visit, to return the visit of His Excellency Tô Lâm ,” the President remarked.

Meanwhile, General Secretary Tô Lâm confirmed Indonesia-Viet Nam’s commitment to strengthen cooperation on various sectors that have developed substantively and effectively. The two countries also committed to supporting each other in national and international forums, the UN and the non-aligned as well as the ASEAN region.

“And also enhancing coordination among ASEAN countries to make ASEAN stronger in carrying out its role and also increasing solidarity as well as ASEAN principles for regional security,” the General Secretary emphasized.

On this opportunity, General Secretary Tô Lâm expressed his appreciation for warm welcome from the Government and people of Indonesia given to Vietnamese delegation.

“We would like to share our feelings. I would also like to convey my best wishes for Your Excellency’s good health and success,” he remarked.
