Indonesia, Viet Nam to Enhance Bilateral Relations

President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, on Friday, November 15, 2024, held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Luong Cuong, at the hotel where President Prabowo stayed in Lima, Peru.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2024 APEC Summit and focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In his introductory remarks, President Prabowo congratulated President Luong Cuong on his inauguration on October 21, 2024. He also expressed his appreciation for the presence of Vice President of Vietnam at President Prabowo’s inauguration the day before.

“Indonesia-Viet Nam relations have been very well established for 70 years. We hope that we will continue to improve the strategic partnership,” President Prabowo said.

The President also highlighted Vietnam’s long history of fighting colonialism and emphasized the importance of resilient relations between the two countries in Southeast Asia. He underlined Indonesia’s commitment to accelerate the ratification of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement and finalize the implementing provisions.

“We have great economic cooperation, and we will continue strengthening it in the future,” President Prabowo said.

In the meantime, President Luong Cuong expressed his appreciation for the strong Indonesia-Viet Nam bilateral relations and his belief that Indonesia will achieve significant progress under President Prabowo’s leadership.

“I am confident that your leadership and capacity can elevate Indonesia to a higher level,” President Luong Cuong conveyed.

President Luong Cuong also proposed improving bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership on the 70th anniversary of bilateral diplomacy between the two countries next year. Furthermore, he mentioned legal resolutions related to regional issues such as the South China Sea, which have been ratified by the Vietnamese National Assembly. He expressed his hope for Indonesia’s support in international forums, including in the UN.

Regarding the economy, the two leaders discussed potential cooperation to achieve the trade target of US$18 billion. President Luong Cuong expressed hope that the two countries are able to expand the market and improve trade facilities through coordination of the related ministries.

“In my opinion, the two countries should expand the market. I have ordered relevant ministers to expand ours,” President Luong Cuong said. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/DNS) (ZI/RI)
