Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan confirmed that Presidential Regulation on electric vehicles is almost completed.

“The bill is already submitted to the Minister of Finance to be signed. I hope it can be stipulated this month. Thus, I will contact the Minister about her approval for the regulation since she is on a working visit,” Luhut told reporters after attending a limited meeting, at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Friday (19/7).

The Coordinating Minister explained that there is no issue regarding the substance of the regulation on electric vehicles and the Presidential Regulation also regulates about the use of local content.

“We also eye to develop battery production facilities since Indonesia has large nickel laterite ore reserves, which is used in lithium batteries,” he added.

The Coordinating Minister asserted that he and Minister of Industry have agreed to apply import quota on electric cars until Indonesia’s domestic electric car manufacturing industry is established. “It might be applied for two years. We will decide the period of time and limit on the quantity of the imported cars,” he added.

The given period of time of two years is based on the estimated time required to establish an electric car manufacturing industry. (FID/OJI/ES)
