President Jokowi Calls for “A Theater of Peace and Inclusivity” in Indo Pacific
Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has appealed to ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners to make Indo-Pacific “a theater of peace and inclusivity”.
“It is a key foundation that will usher in ASEAN to a better future for the people and the world. It is the essence built by Indonesia’s Chairmanship, which is to make ASEAN Matters and become an Epicentrum of Growth,” President Jokowi said during the Closing Ceremony of the 43rd ASEAN Summit at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Jakarta, Thursday (09/07).
According to the President, the 43rd ASEAN Summit has adopted ninety documents and numerous concrete agreements with dialogue partners. However, he added, the closing of the summit did not imply that the duty to actualize ASEAN as an Epicentrum of Growth has come to an end.
“Our work is yet to finish. It is impossible to complete all the great responsibilities of ASEAN in a single Chairmanship,” he added.
To that end, the President surmised that ASEAN needs to unite in the face of the evolving situations and the complexity of global challenges in years to come.
“We must join hands in navigating the challenges and turning them into opportunities, in navigating the rivalries and turning them into collaborations, in navigating exclusivity and turning them into inclusivity, and in navigating differences and turning them into unity,” the President remarked.
