President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated the 10th World Water Forum at Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Badung regency, Bali province, Monday (05/20). President Jokowi emphasized the importance of joint commitment in inclusive and sustainable water management system.

“Welcome to Bali. It is such an honor for Indonesia to host the 10th World Water Forum in order to affirm our joint commitment and to formulate concrete actions in inclusive and sustainable water management system,” he said.

President Jokowi mentioned that 72 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water and only one percent of it is accessible for water consumption and sanitation. It has caused concern for agriculture.

“In 2050, 500 million small farmers, who contribute to 80 percent of global foods, are predicted to be prone to dryness. Without water, there’ll be  no food, no peace, no life. No water, no life, no growth,” he remarked.

The President said that water has a value in the culture of Indonesian people. Therefore, the theme of the 10th World Water Forum was “Water for Shared Prosperity.”

“It can be transformed into three basic principles, namely, avoiding competition, promoting equality and inclusive cooperation, and promoting peace and shared prosperity, which all can be realized with collaboration,” he explained.

President Jokowi expressed hope that the forum can affirm commitment to international collaboration in overcoming water issues.

“Indonesia hopes that the world can be hand-in-hand to affirm collaboration commitment in handling global issues on water. Let’s preserve our water today for shared prosperity tomorrow,” he said, adding that water is the source of daily life and is the symbol of balance and harmony, and therefore it has to be managed well.
