President Jokowi Joins Devotees to Perform Tarawih Prayers at Solo’s New Grand Mosque

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Monday (04/10) joined residents to perform congregational tarawih prayers at the newly built Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the Central Java town of Surakarta, the President’s hometown.

Tarawih are special prayers involving reading long portions of the Quran done during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates Suhail Mohammed Al Mazroui joined the President to perform the prayers.

The Sheikh Zayed Solo Grand Mosque was inaugurated in November last year by the President himself. The mosque was designed to be a replica of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and is the largest in UAE.

Painted in white with gilt ornamentation, the 8,000 square meter mosque has four minarets and is located on Jalan A Yani. (BPMI/UN) (EST/EP)
