President Jokowi, Ministers Watch Together National Team Beat Vietnam 3-0
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo witnessed the convincing victory of the Indonesian national football team over Vietnam 3-0 in the follow-up match of the 2026 World Cup Qualification Group F Asian Zone. He watched the match with a number of ministers at the hotel where he was staying overnight in Palu city, Central Sulawesi province, on Tuesday (03/26) evening.
In the match at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, Vietnam, the Garuda squad opened the scoring in the 9th minute through a goal scored by Jay Idzes. He managed to head the ball into the Vietnam goal using Thom Haye’s corner kick.
The Indonesian national team doubled their lead in the 23rd minute through a goal scored by Ragnar Oratmangoen. He dribbled the ball into the Vietnam penalty box, before then firing a hard shot with his left foot. The 2-0 score lasted until halftime.
A goal from Ramadhan Sananta in the 90+8th minute completed the Indonesian national team’s historic victory over Vietnam. Sananta managed to grab the ball from Egy Maulana Vikri’s header that hit the post to break into the opponent’s goal.
This is the first victory for the Indonesian national team at Vietnam’s own home ground in 20 years. At that time, the Garuda squad beat the host team 3-0 in the group phase of the 2004 Tiger Cup, precisely on December 11, 2004.
After the match, President Jokowi immediately called the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir to extend congratulations. “Congratulations, pass it on to others,” said President Jokowi in the telephone conversation.
With this result, the Indonesian national team is in second place in Group F standings with a score of 7, as the result of two wins, one draw and one loss. Indonesia is 5 points adrift of Iraq as the leader of the standings, which successfully beat the Philippines by five goals without reply.
Also joining President Jokowi watching the match were Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman. (Presidential Secretariat’s BPMI/AIT) (TM/MMB)
