President Jokowi Reiterates Importance of Synchronization of Policy on Climate Change

Synchronization of policy on climate change among developed and developing countries is important, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo during CEOs Forum with several UK’s major investors in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday (01/11).

“All of us, including developed countries [and developing countries], must show more concrete steps in managing climate change, especially in terms of funding support for developing countries in carrying out energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy,” the President said.

In addition to the issue, President Jokowi expressed hope that the adaptation fund amounting to US$100 billion from developed countries must be immediately realized in order to accelerate measures to tackle climate change.

“In recent years, Indonesia has shown concrete steps in terms of climate change management. Our current deforestation rate has reached the lowest number for 20 years, forest fires rate has significantly reduced by 82 percent. Indonesia will also carry out 64 thousand hectares of mangrove forests restoration, which is essential because mangrove forests can store 3-4 times more carbon than peatlands, “said the President.

He expressed belief that Indonesia will fulfill its commitment in the Paris Agreement by 2030 to unconditionally reduce 29 percent of emissions.

“Indonesia has adopted the Long-Term Strategy for Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050 and a detailed road map to achieve the net zero emission target by 2060 or earlier,” the President said.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also said that the world is facing global issue on how it can immediately overcome the COVID-19 pandemic so that the global economic recovery can be done more quickly.

In addition to the pandemic issue, the President said COVID-19 situation in Indonesia is currently getting better.

“The number of daily cases has dropped from its peak of 56 thousand cases on 15 July 2021 to only about 400-700 cases in recent weeks. Indonesia has also administered more than 187 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine. And by the end of the year more than 50 percent of the Indonesian population are estimated to have received their second dose,” he remarked.

Also accompanying the President during the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Kingdom Desra Percaya, and Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) Arsjad Rasjid. (PRESIDENTIAL SECRETARIAT/UN) (AP/MMB)
