President Jokowi: Water Supply System to Ensure Affordable Clean Water to People

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo accompanied by First Lady Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo inaugurated West Semarang Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM), in Semarang city, Central Java province, on Tuesday (01/23).

During the inauguration, the President expressed hope that the new SPAM can bring concrete benefits to the people in meeting their needs for a sustainable and affordable clean water supply.

He went on to say that water is essential for our lives. Thus, the system must be carefully prepared.

“The SPAM has the capacity of 1,000 liters per second and distributes [clean water] to 70,000 households that cover 350,000 people,” he said.

For the record, the facility which has connected more than 60 percent of household in the region is a joint project of the Central Government, regional government, and private sector. The project spent a total budget of Rp870 billion consisting of several sources of financing.

“Rp329 billion of which is from the Central Government, Rp124 billion from regional government, and Rp417 billion from private enterprises,” he added.

On that occasion, the President also lauded the city for serving as an excellent model of clean water management.

The President is also committed to making West Semarang SPAM a pilot project for developing a piped water management system. The President expected all regions in the country to follow suit. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RAS/MUR)
